Yesterday I posted about the meeting today for the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, or CCAC. We now can see some of the fruits of the meeting. On the US Mint site, images of the 2020 Congressional Gold Medal honoring former Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat are available for review.

We are still some months away from the final recommendations being made. Generally speaking, CCAC meets every two months so it likely will be August at the earliest before we see the final recommended designs for this new Congressional Gold Medal.
The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) was established in 2003 by Congress under Public Law 108-15 to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on the themes and designs of all U.S. coins and medals. The CCAC serves as an informed, experienced and impartial resource to the Secretary of the Treasury and represents the interests of American citizens and collectors.
A Congressional Gold Medal is an award bestowed by the United States Congress. The Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom are the highest civilian awards in the United States.[1] It is awarded to people “who have performed an achievement that has an impact on American history and culture that is likely to be recognized as a major achievement in the recipient’s field long after the achievement.”[2] However, “There are no permanent statutory provisions specifically relating to the creation of Congressional Gold Medals. When a Congressional Gold Medal has been deemed appropriate, Congress has, by legislative action, provided for the creation of a medal on an ad hoc basis.”[2] U.S. citizenship is not a requirement.
