CCAC Releases Candidate Images for the 2021 George Washington Quarter

With the America the Beautiful series set to end next year, attention has now turned to the 2022 George Washington Quarter. In three years, a new Reverse will have to be made. The question was if the Eagle Reverse of 1932 through 1998 would return. Based on the last Citizens Coinage Advisory Council (CCAC) meeting, the answer appears to be no.

The October 15th meeting of CCAC was significant in that we saw designs for the 2020 Women’s Suffrage Silver Medal as well as other important coin and commemoratives coming in 2020 and 2021. The George Washington Quarter was amongst them. The 2022 Quarter is set to depict then General Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River on December 25-26, 1776 in the American Revolutionary War. This was the first move in a surprise attack against British forces in Trenton, New Jersey.

Here are the candidates that CCAC is reviewing and one of which they will eventually recommend to the Treasury.

The question that still isn’t fully answered is if the winning design will be the Reverse for several years or if 2021 will be its only appearance. Bare in mind that the Quarter has had two major programs over the past 21 years. From 1999 to 2008 was the State Quarter program. In 2009 was the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters. Finally, from 2010 through to 2021. Interestingly, the legislation for the America the Beautiful series did authorize for an additional 11 years for that series which would depict a second historical site from each state and territory. It seems that the plan is to make a change in 2021.
