High Demand Forces Second Printing of The Red Book

In what is certainly a good sign for coin collecting, Whitman Publishing has announced that they have gone back to the presses to produced a second printing of The Red Book, spiral-bound edition. The A Guide to United States Coins is in its 73rd edition in 2020 and Whitman normally makes a single run of the books each year. Demand however has been higher than expected for the 2020 edition and thus the publisher has gone back to press to print more. These second print runs will be noted on the book’s Copyright Page. It marks the fist time since 2006 that the publisher has had to produced a second run.

“We plan our print runs very carefully, benchmarking against previous years’ sales,” said Whitman president Mary Burleson. “With years of data to analyze, we can control our inventory by printing to anticipated collector demand. This year’s demand has unexpectedly been much stronger than normal. Not since 2006 have we had to go back to press to meet higher than expected demand.”

“The Red Book is distributed nationally in bookstores and other retail locations, and online,” said Burleson. “The increased demand suggests to us that many new collectors and potential collectors have entered the market over the past year. This is a positive sign for the hobby.”
