Mint Production Report – June 2020

The United States Mint has released its June 2020 Product Report for circulating coinage, reflecting a significant increase across all denominations for the month. A stunning 1.596 billion coins were struck between the Denver and Philadelphia Mints in June, making it by far the busiest month for the Mint in 2020. The heavy production should aleve any fears of a coin shortage as the United States continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leading in production, as usual, was the Lincoln Cent. 889.6 million Cents were minted in June 2020, 471.6 million in Denver with the remaining 418 million in Philadelphia. This is an increase of over 400 million coins from May 2020 (405.6 million), or 45.6%. It was the highest production month for Lincoln Cents this year. It puts the total Lincoln Cent production for 2020 at 3.562 billion Cents.

162.48 million Jefferson Nickel were struck in the month of June. 79.68 million were produced in Denver while the Philadelphia Mint pressed 82.8 million of the 5-Cent pieces. That results in a 42% increase over May 2020 which had 94.32 million Nickels produced. For the year, 619.92 million Jefferson Nickel coins have been minted for circulation.

The Roosevelt Dime also saw a significant increase in production, up 32.8% month-over-month from May. 323 million Dimes were minted across the Denver and Philadelphia Mints, 155 million being produced in the Mile High City while 168 were produced in the City of Brotherly Love. That pushed Dime production for 2020 to over 1 billion coins (1.1895 billion).

Finally, there were 221,400,000 Washington Quarters produced in June 2020, an increase of 112.6 million coins over May 2020. That is a 51% increase for those keeping score at home. The Denver Mint produced 571.4 million Quarters last month while the Philadelphia facility produced slightly more at 574.6 million. For 2020, there have been a total of 1.146 billion Quarters minted for circulation.

As has been the case since January and February, no Native American Dollar nor Presidential Dollar coins were produced in May.

Putting these figures together, the United States Mint has produced 6.517 billion coins for the first half of 2020 (6,517,420,000). That puts its pace well ahead of its 2019 total of 11.92 billion coins.
