President Donald Trump today signed H.R. 6192, the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act. The bill now becomes law, authorizing the Treasury to have the United State Mint produce a 2021 Morgan and 2021 Peace Dollar. The full text of the bill can be found here.

An effort to empower the United States Mint to issue coins celebrating the Morgan and Peace Dollars, two of America’s most-loved series, was introduced to the House of Representatives back in March 2020. The bill (H.R. 6192), which is called the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, is an exciting development for United States numismatics and deserved – and earned – the widespread support of the coin collecting community. With the bill now signed into law, the Mint will issue a 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollar to honor the 100th anniversary of the transition of the United States dollar coin from the Morgan to the Peace Dollar.

The Act itself does not call out any mintage limits, only that the coin is authorized to be sold in 2021 and that the coins will have the exact same designs of the 1921 Morgan and 1921 Peace dollar coins. The designs will, of course, be enhanced slightly thanks to the improved minting processes over the last 100 years.

Ultimately this is a big win for the Numismatic community and likely will be for the United States Mint. The Morgan Dollar remains one of the most beloved coins ever produced by the United States and while the short lived Peace Dollar doesn’t have the same acclaim, it is also a sought after type given its short production period. The Mint likely will produce both uncirculated and proof versions of the coins and it is likely these coins will sell well for the Mint.

As to when we can expect to see these coins, other than in 2021, that remains to be seen. The Mint has already published its production schedule for this year so these new coins will have to be squeezed in somewhere in that schedule.
