South Carolina American Innovation Dollar Bags & Rolls Sales Start Today

The United States Mint will begin sales of the South Carolina American Innovation Dollar later today. Sales will be on bags and rolls of the 2020 dated dollar coin, which will start at Noon Eastern, 9:00 AM Pacific on the United States Mint’s website.

The South Carolina coin honors educator and civil rights activist Septima Poinsette Clark.

Educator and activist Septima Poinsette Clark has been called the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.” Born May 3, 1898, in Charleston, SC, she was a social innovator and pioneer who shined the spotlight on the crucial link between education and political organizing aimed at gaining the right to vote.

In all, there will be four products offered by the Mint for the coin:

As usual for bags and rolls, the Mint has not set any household limit on the number that can be purchased.

While the coin is being released in 2021, it will bear the 2020 Mint Mark as it was designated and produced last year. The Mint did the same thing last year with the 2019 American Innovation Dollars. With these coins not released for general circulation, they often become one of the final products the Mint releases each year – thus releases tend to bleed over into the next.

The American Innovation Dollar coin came about through legislation passed in 2018 and is set to run through the year 2032. In all, there will be 57 coins released in the program with the first one released on December 14, 2018. That coin, however, was an introductory coin fundamentally to show the coin off to the public and was never released for circulation.
