Tubman $20 Note Now Seems Likely – and Soon

With the change in administration, it seems likely that Harriet Tubman will appear on the $20 Note – and soon. The change in direction on the note from the Trump administration to the Biden administration came via Biden’s White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki earlier this week that the Treasury Department is resuming the efforts to put Tubman on the $20 note and is making efforts to “speed up that effort”

The Treasury Department is taking steps to resume efforts to put Harriet Tubman on the front of the new $20 notes. It’s important that our notes, our money… reflect the history and diversity of our country and Harriet Tubman’s image gracing the new $20 note will certainly reflect that.

The Obama administration had first proposed putting the iconic abolitionist on the paper currency in 2016. The goal was for the replacement of Jackson, the seventh U.S. president, to take place in 2020. However, those plans were shelved under the Trump administration when in May 2019, then Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced it was delayed due to counterfeiting measures that would be integrated into the new bill.

Today, before the House Financial Services Committee, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that a any redesign o the $20 note has been pushed back to 2028. Secretary Mnuchin indicated the primary reason for the delay was due to counterfeiting issues.

“The primary reason we have looked at redesigning the currency is for counterfeiting issues,” Mnuchin said. “Based upon this, the $20 bill will now not come out until 2028. The $10 bill and the $50 bill will come out with new features beforehand.”

Mnuchin went on further to say that the next administration will have to decide if they want to make the change and it appears that is the case under the Biden administration.

Harriet Tubman $20 Note Proposed Design

There are rumors that the plates for the new $20 note continued to be developed, even after Mnuchin’s announcement. While that is not fully substantiated, if the plates were nearly or fully completed, it is possible we could see the change in the $20 note this year.

The new $20 note will also carry the signature of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who’s nomination was approved by the Senate 84-15 vote on Monday. She was sworn in yesterday by Vice President Harris and becomes the 78th Treasury Secretary and the first female in that role in the department’s history.
