The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) has released the candidate images for the upcoming American Women Quarter Program. The committee released images of the Obverse candidates as well as the candidate images of the first two coins in the series honoring Maya Angelou and Sally Ride. The designs are a result of the CCAC meeting held earlier this month. The new program calls for five different Reverse designs honoring trailblazing American women to be released starting in 2022 through to 2025. The Mint announced earlier this week that Angelou and Ride would be the first two women honored in the new coin program.
The Obverse of the American Women Quarter program coins will continue to have George Washington on it. However, the design will be changed. This is similar to the change that the Jefferson Nickel had during the Westward Journey series back in 2004-2005. What is not known is if this new Obverse design will remain after the program ends in 2025.
The first two Reverse designs honoring Maya Angelou and Sally Ride were also released by CCAC.
Neither the United States Mint nor CCAC indicated when final designs would be selected but historically, that should happen late this Summer or early Fall. With the first coins going into production next year, dies will need to be made by the Mint and time will be needed to do so. Further, three more Reverse designs for 2022 have yet to be decided upon which will also have to happen in 2021.
