Mint Releases Line Art of 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coins

The United States Mint has released the line art images of the 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball commemorative coins. The three coins, a $5 gold coin, $1 silver coin, and .50 Cent clad coin will all be released next year to honor the centennial of the leagues which was in 2020. The bill authorizing the coins was signed into law in December 2020.

The Negro Leagues of baseball was founded in 1920 in response to players of color not being allowed to play in the Major Leagues of Baseball. The league produced some of the greatest baseball players in history including Satchel Paige, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, and of course Jackie Robinson. Robinson became the first player of color in 1947 to play in the Major Leagues. The Negro Leagues continued until 1960 which, by that point, MLB had nearly fully integrated. In December 2020, the leagues were recognized as a Major League of baseball, meaning all of the stats and records of the Negro Leagues will now be part of Major League Baseball’s stats and records. Previously, they were separate.

50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins, and 750,000 Half Dollar clad commemorative coins will be minted as required by the law.

Here then is the line art for the coins that will be released next year:

The United States Mint has not released its 2022 production schedule as of the posting of this article. That means it is unclear when these commemoratives will be released but, by law, it will be in 2022.
