The United States Mint will begin sales of the 2022 American Eagle Palladium Reverse Proof coin later today. The coin, minted out of 99.95% palladium, will be available directly from the United States Mint starting at Noon Eastern, 9:00 AM Pacific. Only 7,500 coins will be available, a significant decrease from the 12,000 minted in 2021. This year, the coin is priced at $3050.00.

The overall design of the Palladium Eagle remains the same with Obverse featuring a high-relief likeness of “Winged Liberty”, the design found on the Mercury Dime. It was designed by Adolph A. Weinman. The Reverse is also designed by Weinman and is a high-relief version of the 1907 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal Reverse. Unlike the American Eagle gold and silver proof and uncirculated coins, the palladium Eagle did not receive a redesign last year and remains the same since its introduction in 2018.

This year, the Mint is producing the Palladium Eagle in a Reverse Proof finish. This is the second year that the Mint has produced this coin in a Reverse Proof finishing, having done it previously in 2019. For those not familiar with it, reverse proof coin is one featuring an “inverted” proof finish. The background is frosted, while the design elements are polished to a mirror-like finish, creating a magnificent contrast. This enhanced reverse proof coin has the same frosted background as a reverse proof coin, but what sets it apart are the multiple polished and frosted finishes applied to different isolated design elements. The selective polishing and frosting dramatically enhances the visual impact of the design.

With the limited production and high demand for bullion products, this year’s palladium Eagle is likely to sell out quickly.
