The United States Mint has released high-resolution images of the 2023 American Eagle and 2023 American Buffalo bullion coins. The new photos were posted late last week on the Mint’s image library page, offering a sneak peek at the bullion coins for next year. Note that the images are only of the bullion coins, not the Burnished or Proof versions. Those will be released at a later date.
The 2023 Eagle and Buffalo coins will not have any design changes and will be identical to the 2022 releases. For the silver American Eagle, the obverse (heads) features a refreshed depiction of Adolph A. Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The Reverse features the design introduced in 2021, a Bald Eagle in flight.
The 2023 gold American Eagle Obverse continues with the iconic full-length figure of Liberty with flowing hair that Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed, while the Reverse will feature the design introduced in 2021 by Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer Jennie Norris. Note that the design is the same for all the gold American Eagle coins: One-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce.
Finally, the 2023 American Buffalo coin, too, remains unchanged from its design of last year. The Buffalo features designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel designed by James Earle Fraser. It has a $50 face value and is made of 99.999% pure gold. The coin was introduced in 2006 and has become one of the more popular bullion coins from the Mint, mainly due to the popular Buffalo nickel design. As a reminder to collectors, new and old, United States Mint bullion coins are sold to Authorized Purchasers and cannot be directly purchased from the Mint itself. You can find a list of Authorized Purchasers here on the Mint’s site. Many Authorized Purchasers, including APMEX, offer pre-sales of the 2023 Eagles on their sites. Shipping times will vary based on the release of the bullion coins by the Mint, but you can expect a late January to early February ship date on Eagles. American Buffalos will not be released until later in the Spring.
