The following is a Press Release from the American Numismatic Association (ANA) announcing various Money Museum celebrations, including free admission, for National Coin Week.

Every coin, every piece of paper money in your pocket, wallet, or purse has a story to tell about history, according to the American Numismatic Association (ANA) (money.org). These stories will be celebrated during the 100th annual National Coin Week (NationalCoinWeek.org), April 16-22, 2023. Established in 1924, the theme of this year’s National Coin Week is “Our Money, Our Heritage, Our America.”

From April 18-21, the ANA Money Museum (money.org/money-museum) in Colorado Springs will celebrate National Coin Week with a range of activities, including an open house with special events on Saturday, April 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the Money Museum is free for all visitors, April 18-22. Children 17 and under can participate in a scavenger hunt to obtain a prize throughout the week.

“Designs on U.S. coins and paper money commemorate notable people, events, accomplishments, and shared principles,” explained Kim Kiick, executive director of the ANA. “This year’s theme focuses on how our money tells the story of our country and helps form our national identity.” Located at 818 N. Cascade Avenue next door to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College, the Money Museum open house event on Saturday, April 22 will feature activities that include:Mini-Mint demonstrations throughout the day. Guests can receive a freshly-minted National Coin Week medalette. The “Plinko” prize drop, where every child can drop a plinko chip to win a prize.A raffle drawing to win 30 seconds in the Cash Tornado, where the winner gets to keep all the cash they can grab.Numismatic door prizes and trivia questions for a chance to win a silver coin.

“Money is history you can hold in your hands. Each coin and banknote ever produced has a story to tell, from the first ancient coins struck 2,600 years ago to coins and currency made today around the world,” said Dr. Ralph Ross, president of the Congressionally-chartered ANA. Over the centuries, the designs, denominations and metallic content of coins can reveal a great deal about civilizations, past and present, such as famous and not-so-famous political and historical figures, important events, and landmarks.  The ANA is providing complimentary online educational programs (info.money.org/ncw-webinars-2023) as well as hobby-related games and quizzes for the chance to win prizes during National Coin Week.  Between April 16 and 22, new members can join the ANA (money.org/join) at special discount rates of $20 for an online-only membership and $36 to receive the print edition of the Association’s award-winning monthly magazine, The NumismatistValid for new ANA members only, or those who have not been members the previous six months. Use reference code NCW23X at checkout. Observed every third week of April, National Coin Week was established 100 years ago to attract the general public to the enjoyable hobby of coin collecting.
