If you have been waiting to pick up the American Legion Silver Dollar and Veterans Medal Set from the United States Mint, you may have missed your opportunity. This morning, the Mint’s site is showing the set as Unavailable.
The $99.95 set was limited to a production of 10,000 units overall. According to the latest US Mint Sales report, 9,864 sets had been sold, meaning only 136 were left. The report was through June 30, 2019 so it is possible that on the first July, 1 and 2 they sold the remaining sets. The coin and medal set was released by the US Mint on May 20, 2019 meaning it took roughly a month for them to sell out.
The set consists of the American Legion Proof Dollar commemorative in silver as well as the American Veterans silver medal. The Silver Dollar was initially released in March 2019 (you can get it here from the Mint). That coin, produced in the Philadelphia mint, has a production limit of 400,000 across all product sets, including this coin and medal set.
Like many other commemorative sets, the American Legion set provided a financial benefit to that organization with every one sold. This is something that the mint does often with commemorative sets as it is written into the legislation that authorizes them. The good news is that with the reasonably quick sell out of the coin and medal set, the American Legion will get the maximum benefit of the legislation.
