The following is a Press Release from the American Numismatic Society (ANS) announcing its 2020 nominations and governance for various roles within the Society. These roles include Trustees, Fellows, and the Board of Trustees. The list reads as a list of who’s who in Numismatics.

Ms. Carole Anne Menzi Collier, joined the ANS as a Full Member in 2019 and is a member of the ANS’s Sage Society. Born in NYC and raised in Westchester, she graduated valedictorian from Rye Neck High School. She holds a BA Magna cum laude Wesleyan University (Middletown CT) in the first class of women, Phi Beta Kappa; M. Phil History of Art, Yale University, and an MBA, International Trade and Finance, New York University. She met the art historian and realist artist James M. Collier in the sacristy of Santa Croce in Florence. They were married in1983 until his death in 2015. Now continues as curator of his collection of ancient coins and his paintings. Her career includes 25 years in banking of which majority at ABN AMRO Bank in New York and Amsterdam heading up Global Public Sector as Director General, and recently financial consultant to startup companies in Italy and the Netherlands. Has lived on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam for 30 years. Passions include classical piano, Italian cooking, Renaissance Art and Shelties.
Ms. Beth Deisher, of Sylvania, OH, became an ANS Member in 1983, and was elected a Fellow in 1991. From 1985-2012 was editor of Coin World and from January 2017 to September 2019 was Director of Anti-Counterfeiting at the Anti-Counterfeiting Educational Foundation. Author or primary editor of 10 books in the numismatic field. Recipient of the 2010 ANA Farran Zerbe Memorial Award; the Numismatic Literary Guild’s Clemy Award (1995); the Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for journalistic excellence (2006); and was inducted into the Numismatic Hall of Fame in 2013. First elected to the ANS Board of Trustees in 2013, Ms. Deisher has served on the Strategic Planning Committee and the MACO committee, and is a supporter of the ANS Appeals, most recently to the campaign to endow the Chair of the Executive Director.
Mr. Daniel Hamelberg, Champaign, IL, has been a member since 1986, a Life Fellow since 2002, was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2004, and is one of the founding members of the ANS’ Augustus B. Sage Society. An aficionado of rare American numismatic auction catalogues and literature, Dan is a past president of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society. He followed the advice of buying the book before the coin and then proceeded to assemble a high grade first year of U. S. Type collection in all metals. He has served as chair of the Collections Committee and served on the Library Committee. Mr. Hamelberg is a major donor to the ANS Hudson Square Renovation Fund as well as to the Francis D. Campbell Library Chair, ANS annual appeals, and the Annual Gala.
Prof. Sebastian Heath, Brooklyn, NY. Has been a member of the ANS since 1999, became Life Associate in 2001, was elected a Fellow of the Society in 2012, and elected as Trustee serving for the 2018-2020 term. A Clinical Associate Professor of Roman Archaeology and Computational Humanities at NYU’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, his research interests include numismatics, Roman pottery, and digital tools with a focus on computational approaches to Mediterranean archaeology. From 2000 to 2005 he was Director of Information Technology at the ANS, and since then has been a Research Scientist. Since first coming to the ANS in 1999, Prof. Heath has been a contributor to the Society’s successful digitization efforts.
Mr. Jonathan Kagan, of New York, NY, joined the ANS in 1982, was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1985, became a Life Fellow in 2000, was elected to the ANS Board of Trustees serving 1995-2000, and again serving for the 2020 term. He held the position of Treasurer from 1998-2000, and in 2020, and currently serves on the Executive, Finance, and Strategic Planning Committees. An investment banker by training, he is the Managing Principal of Corporate Partners in New York. Previously, Jonathan was a Managing Director of Corporate Partners I, which he joined in 1990, and of Centre Partners Management LLC. He began his career in the investment banking division of Lazard in 1980 and became a General Partner in 1987. At Lazard, Jonathan helped head the corporate finance and capital markets areas. He has been a director of public companies and is a director of several private companies. Jonathan received a D.Litt and M.A. (1st Hon.) from Oxford University and an A.B., summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Harvard College. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society and the Society of Antiquaries. His academic interests include early Greek coins and the history of numismatics.
Mr. Robert A. Kandel, New York, NY, is a Fellow, a generous supporter and one of the founding members of the ANS’ Augustus B. Sage Society. An ANS Trustee since 2000, Mr. Kandel serves on the ANS Executive Committee, and served as chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee from 2008-2019. His numismatic interests include US coins, particularly the Lincoln cent. As counsel to the firm Goldberg Weprin Finkel Goldstein LLP (formerly with Kaye Scholer, LLP) in New York City, his areas of experience include legislative and regulatory matters, real estate, real estate litigation and general business matters. He has served as Commissioner of Economic Development for the City of New York, and in other governmental posts. Mr. Kandel has counseled and represented many not for profit institutions including The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Inwood House (now part of Children’s Village) and The Sisters of Charity/Bayley Seton Hospital. Mr. Kandel received his B.A. degree, with honors in history, from Williams College and his law degree from Columbia University School of Law. He is also Chairman of the Board of Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth an institution which works with at risk youth and their families.
Mr. John Nebel, is owner and president of the privately held Computer Systems Design Company since 1978, in Boulder, Colorado. CSDC provides technology solutions for governments, private sector businesses and non-profit associations. His firm’s philanthropic endeavors include free web hosting for some 50 numismatic clubs, as well as the Numismatic Bibliomania Society’s website and E-Sylum archives, to name just a few. His funds, as well as his technology, digital and photography skills have provided support to the University of Colorado, Boulder, as well to the ANA who have honored him with awards including their 2019 Wilde Memorial Award for Excellence. With his numismatic interests in ancient Greek and Roman coins, and photography, Mr. Nebel joined the ANS in 2005, became a Life Associate in 2013, was elected to the ANS Board of Trustees in 2014, and is a generous donor to the Society. He received an A.B. degree from Princeton University and M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School.
Mr. Robert Ronus, was born in London in 1942 to a Swiss father and an English mother. He later acquired an Australian wife, Ann, and two children. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He spent almost all his professional career in the investment management business, first in London, then in Geneva and since 1983 in Los Angeles with the Capital Group, where he was a global investment manager and held a variety of management positions including non-executive Chairman. He went part-time in 2002 and retired completely in June 2019. As a small boy in England, Robert collected pennies from pocket change, trying to find as many dates as possible, It was a time when Victorian pennies still circulated and he still has this collection, including some very worn Victorian pennies where the only thing still visible is the date in the exergue. He later inherited a few Swiss cantonal coins and his interests broadened. As a teenager and a student, he frequented the coin dealers who then plied their trade in the Portobello Road market and bought minor 19th century European coins from as many countries as he could find. He has remained a history buff all his life, with a particular interest in the formative years of modern Europe from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. After marriage and starting a family, he abandoned coins for about 25 years. Then he went to a coin show in Los Angeles and caught the coin bug again. . He has published over 40 short articles on European coins of the early modern period from 1500-1700 in the Numismatics International Bulletin and has also translated or helped translate into English some articles by non-native English speakers. He was elected a Fellow of the ANS in 2012 and has enjoyed a few Augustus Sage Society trips. He is also a member of the British Numismatic Society, the Numismatic Society of Ireland, the Société suisse de numismatique and the Gesellschaft für Internationale Geldgeschichte. He is a supporter of the Heberden Coin Room at the Ashmolean Museum and the Münzkabinett at the Staatliche Museen in Berlin.
Dr. Christopher J. Salmon, MD, Paradise Valley, AZ, has been a member of the ANS since 2001, was elected to the ANS Board of Trustees in 2011, and has served on the Collections Committee since 2013 (chair from 2013-2017). A former National Institutes of Health Research Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, he was Director of Thoracic Imaging at Brown University and Oregon Health & Science University before entering private practice in radiology in Arizona. He is the author of The Silver Coins of Massachusetts, published by the ANS in 2010, for which he received the award for “Best U.S. Coin Book” from the Numismatic Literary Guild in 2011. Dr. Salmon has written articles in both the numismatic and medical literature and is a contributing author in several medical textbooks. He is also an enthusiastic collector, bibliophile, and student in a wide variety of areas including early Americana, Greek and Roman art, music, and the history of science; and serves on the Advisory Board of the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg.
Dr. Ute Wartenberg, New York, NY, served as Executive Director of the American Numismatic Society from 1999-2019. Before joining the staff of the Society in 1998, she was Curator of Greek Coins at the British Museum for seven years. Dr. Wartenberg was a Rhodes Scholar and holds a DPhil in Classical Literature from Oxford University, where she taught Greek language and literature. She is currently a Research Curator at the American Numismatic Society and an Adjunct Member in the Department of Classics at Columbia University. She is the curator of the Amastris Collection. She is the author of many publications and curated exhibitions on ancient and US coins. Dr. Wartenberg has served on a many non-for-profit boards and committees. She was the first Chairperson of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, on which she served from 2003 to 2007. Since 2008, she has been a Trustee of the Saint Gaudens Memorial, which preserves and exhibits Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s work and legacy in New Hampshire. She was a Trustee of the Annie Tinker Association for Women from 2009-18, and served as President and CEO of this organization, which assisted elderly professional women by providing financial support, from 2014-15. In 2015, Dr Wartenberg was elected into the Committee of the International Numismatic Council and in 2019 a member and Chairperson of ICOM International Committee for Money and Banking Museums. In her limited spare time, she enjoys gardening and fencing (as in the sport).
Pursuant to Article III, Section 1. the Nominating and Governance Committee nominates the following two (2) Individual to serve as Honorary Life Fellows, beginning in FY2021 for vote by the Trustees at their regular annual meeting on October 24, 2020:
Dr. Cécile Morrisson, of Desvallières, France, is a leading expert in Byzantine coinage. Honorary Director of Research at the CNRS, member of the Institute (Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres), and correspondant of several very distinguished academic institutions, she is affiliated with the Institut d’Etudes byzantines, Collège de France. She was Director of the Department of Coins, Medals and Antiquities of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and for many years an Advisor for Byzantine Numismatics at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington.
Mr. Richard Schaefer, of Narberth, PA, donated his archive of Roman Republican die studies to the ANS. About 25 years, ago he began to collect systematically images of all struck Roman Republican issues included in Crawford’s Roman Republican Coinage. It is estimated that he has documented and analyzed some 300,000 specimens in the Roman Republican Die Project (RRDP). By digitizing the extraordinary amount of material, his life work will be preserved in perpetuity and available for further study.

Mr. Wayne Kimber, Hollister, CA, a member since 2012, is a supporter of ANS appeals. He assisted Richard Abdy of the British Museum in a new, updated and revised edition of Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) Vol. 11.2 for the Emperor Hadrian.
Ms. Shanna Schmidt, of Oak Park, IL, is a specialist in ancient numismatics with a focus on Greek Coinage. She founded her company Shanna Schmidt Numismatics Inc. in 2016. A member since 2015, Ms. Schmidt has supported the ANS with donations to the collection, numismatic conventions, and gala participation.
Mr. Dave Steine, of Roberts WI, a member since 2000, is a supporter of ANS appeals, the annual gala, and is an ANS Augustus B. Sage Society Member.
