The United States Mint announced yesterday that the Maya Angelou American Women Quarter, the first in the new series, is now shipping. The circulation ready Quarters are shipping to the Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States, where banks can purchase the rolls for distribution and circulation. Depending on where you are located in the United States, you could see these quarters in circulation as early as the end of this month.
The Maya Angelou quarter is the first of five in the American Women Quarter series that will be released this year. Honoring Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, and Anna May Wong, the Quarters for 2022 will have a Reverse design honoring each of these influential women in American History as well as have the Laura Gardin Fraser design featuring a right facing George Washington. You can see all the designs of these new quarters here.
Keep in mind that the Mint’s announcement is regarding the circulation grade coins for the new quarter. Numismatic products for the new coin will go on sale on February 7th in the form of bags and rolls. These too are circulation grade coins but will come in special Mint packaging. Note that you cannot order the rolls destined for your local bank directly from the Mint. You should, however, be able to get them from your local bank in the next few weeks.
As to where in the country you can expect this coin to show up first in your pocket change, the usual places are Denver and Philadelphia where the Mint locations that produce the coins are located, as well as locations where Federal Reserve banks are located such as New York, Boston, Dallas, and San Francisco.
