The United States Mint has released its Circulating Coin Production Report for September 2022, showing that across the nation’s Mint facilities that 940.7 million coins were produced for circulation. September 2022 marked the third consecutive month of production declines overall and the first time the Mint produced less than a billion coins in a month this year.
The Lincoln Cent saw its lowest production figure of 2022 in September, with just 362.6 million coins being minted. Of the coins made, 228.4 million were produced at the Denver Mint and the remaining 134.2 million were minted at the Philadelphia Mint. Despite the drop, the Mint reports that it has now minted more than 5 billion Cents this year. Overall, 5,282,800,000 Lincoln Cents have been produced in 2022.
The Jefferson Nickel, however, saw an increase in production. The Mint reports that 130,320,000 Nickels were produced in September, up from the 104 million reported in August. Breaking down the mintage figures, 68.88 million Jefferson’s were pressed at the Denver Mint with the remaining 61.44 million minted in Philadelphia. For the year, the Mint now reports 1,177,680,000 Jefferson Nickels have been produced for circulation this year.
Turning to the Roosevelt Dime, it too saw an increase in production month-over-month in September. The Mint reported that it made 246 million Dimes in the Month, 133 million in Denver and 113 million in Philadelphia. This is up over the 217.5 million the Mint reported producing in August. For 2022, the Mint has now produced 2.293 billion Dimes for circulation.
The last circulating coin for the United States that the Mint reported producing last month was the Washington Quarter. According to the report, the Mint pressed 201.8 million Quarters for circulation, up from the 180 million in August. 105.8 million of the Quarters produced in the month were minted in Denver, while Philadelphia reported 96 million being minted. The September figures bring total reported production of the Washington Quarter to 1.925 billion. As a reminder on Quarter production, the Mint does not break down which Quarter designs make up the overall production figure.
With the September figures considered, the Mint has now produced 10,690,740,000 coins for circulation in 2022. This is down from the 11,221,540,000 that the Mint had reported minting at the end of September last year.
