NGC Special Labels and Designations for the 2023 American Women Quarters

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) has announced in a Press Release that it will be offering special labels and designations for the 2023 American Women Quarter Program releases. The 2023 American Women Quarter program will have five different Reverse designs, honoring Bessie Coleman, Jovita Idar, Edith Kanakaʻole, Eleanor Roosevelt and Maria Tallchief.

The first of the 2023 American Women Quarter release goes on sale later today at the United States Mint.

The US Mint is releasing the new American Women Quarters, which feature renowned women whose accomplishments helped shape the United States. The 2023 coins recognize the achievements of Bessie Coleman, Jovita Idar, Edith Kanakaʻole, Eleanor Roosevelt and Maria Tallchief. The multi-year program will run through 2025.

Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is offering an elegant American Women label to complement these special coins. This one-of-a-kind label displays the five women who are featured on the 2023 Quarters and is being offered by default for no additional charge. The popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases designations and labels are also available.

The reverses of 2023 Quarters will honor the following women:

  • Bessie Coleman, who is shown suiting up in preparation for flight, with the inscription “6.15.1921,” the date Coleman received her pilot’s license
  • Jovita Idar, who is shown with her hands clasped; within her body are inscriptions representing some of her greatest accomplishments and the newspapers for which she wrote
  • Edith Kanakaʻole, who is shown with her hair and lei poʻo morphing into the elements of a Hawaiian landscape, symbolizing Kanakaʻole’s life’s work of preserving the natural land and traditional Hawaiian culture
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, who is shown with the scales of justice against a backdrop representing the globe, symbolic of her impactful work with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Maria Tallchief, who is shown spotlit in balletic pose, and her Osage name, which translates to “Two Standards,” written in Osage orthography.

The common obverse design of all coins in the American Women Quarters Program is by Laura Gardin Fraser, one of the most prolific female sculptors of the early 20th century, whose works span the art and numismatic worlds. Fraser’s design depicts a portrait of George Washington, which she originally composed and sculpted as a candidate for the Washington Quarters beginning in 1932. Her design was well-received at that time and was nearly selected.

The American Women Quarters Program will release additional Quarters annually honoring women who have made an impact in various fields.
