Submissions are being accepted for the Sundman Lecture Symposium, taking place during the American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) Chicago (Rosemont) World’s Fair of Money, August 6-10. The theme this year is “A Century of Change; 1924 to 2024,” which focuses on how money, its appearance, subject matter and the numismatic hobby has changed over the last 100 years.
A century ago, the numismatic hobby was very different; how collectors acquired coins was limited to face-to-face or mail order transactions, generally through coin shops or auction houses and professional grading standards were unknown. In sharp contrast, today the market has grown exponentially – initially by the expansion of convention bourse floors and then through the appearance of the internet which made massive growth possible. The invention of third-party grading further expanded the market, changing the hobby in ways undreamed of in 1924. Other developments include changes in importance of paper currency plus the changes in the materials, subject matter and appearance of money. Presentations will focus on any (or related) aspects of these changes and how they have affected the hobby over the last century. New research and scholarship will be prioritized.
The Symposium will be held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on Wednesday, August 7, 10 am to 4:15 pm.
To become a speaker, submit a summary of your lecture proposal, not to exceed 500 words. The summary should contain an introduction, a brief discussion of the subject, and sources and research method. Electronic submissions are required. Submissions should be sent to Douglas Mudd at mudd@money.org. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2024. Presenters will be notified if they have been selected by April 9.Selected presenters will receive a $250 honorarium and can attend the Sundman Luncheon free of charge.
