CCAC Releases Armed Forces Marine Corps Silver Medal Candidates

The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) has released candidate images for the 2021 Armed Forces Silver Medal honoring the United States Marine Corps. Founded in 1775, The United States Marines are responsible for expeditionary and amphibious operations with the United States Navy. Since 1834, the Marine Corps has been a component of the Navy.

The United States Marine Corps traces its roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War, formed by Captain Samuel Nicholas by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on 10 November 1775, to raise two battalions of Marines. That date is regarded and celebrated as the date of the Marine Corps’s birthday

The medal is aimed to honor the Corps itself for its service, courage and valor while protecting the United States throughout its history.

Final designs for the medal will happen later this year. The medal itself will be released at some point in 2021. The medal will be produced in silver and is different from the various annual bronze medals that the Mint produces in honor of the various military branches. Those bronze medals can be found on the Mint’s site.

All meeting information for CCAC meetings can be found on the United States Mint site.
