The Numismatic Crime Information Center (NCIC) is asking for the public’s help in finding a recently shipped package, containing a high value gold coin from Nevada to Texas. The package was shipped in late March via USPS and it was shipped requiring signature. However, the package has not arrived and is either missing or stolen. The United States Postal Service is also investigating.
It is not known if the package ever left Nevada or was lost or stolen in transit.
The coin in the package was a 1884-CC Liberty Head Type 3 $20 gold coin. It was graded by NGC as AU-53 and has certification number 502630-013
Collectors and dealers are asked to be on the look out for this coin as, if it were stolen, the thief could try to get rid of it quickly at a price “too good to be true”. Dealers, coin shop owners, and pawn shop owners in particular are encouraged to be on the look out for this rare coin coming into their shop. Given that the coin have been graded by PCGS, that should help in identifying and recovering of it with a bit of help and attention from the community.
NCIC and the numismatic public has already been helpful in the recovery of multiple coins that have been stolen in 2021 and late 2020 so these public pleas make a big difference in finding coins in these situations.
If you have any information on this coin or see any of them in your shop or online, you can contact Doug Davis at 817-723-7231 or Doug@numismaticcrimes.org with details. You can also contact your local police department who can contact NCIC.
