NCIC Seeks Help in Finding Missing Shield Nickel

The Numismatic Crime Information Center (NCIC) is asking for help in locating a rare Shield Nickel. The coin has been reported lost or stolen after being shipped via the United States Postal Service (USPS) from Reno, Nevada to Milton, Washington. The last scanning of the package by the Postal Service occurred in Tacoma, Washington.

Specifically, the package contained a rare 1874 Double Die Obverse Shield Nickel FS-102. It was graded by PCGS at AU-53 and carries the registration number of 38400.53/29323493. Your can see an image of the coin below:

Collectors and dealers are asked to be on the look out for this coin as, if it was stolen, the thief could try to get rid of it quickly at a price “too good to be true”. Dealers, coin shop owners, and pawn shop owners in particular are encouraged to be on the look out. Given that the coin is graded by PCGS, it should make recovery a bit easier if everyone stays on their toes.

If you have any information on these coins or see any of them in your shop or online, you can contact Doug Davis at 817-723-7231 or Doug@numismaticcrimes.org with details. You can also contact your local police department who can contact NCIC.
