United States Mint Circulating Coinage Production Report – November 2022

The United States Mint has released its Circulating Coin Production Report for November 2022, showing that 906 million coins were produced for circulation across the nation’s Mint facilities. The total production is the lowest of any month in 2022, not uncommon for the final two months of any calendar year as the Mint prepares for next year’s coin production. Unsurprisingly, individual denominations’ production was down month-over-month compared to the October 2022 report.

According to the Mint’s report, just 322.8 million Lincoln Cents were produced for circulation in November 2022. That is a decrease of 135.2 million when compared to October. Breaking down the production figure, the Mint produced 160.8 million Cents in Denver in November, with the remaining 162 million produced in Philadelphia. Considering the November production numbers, the Mint has now minted 6.063 billion Lincoln Cents for circulation. Compared to the Mint’s production report through November of last year, that is nearly one billion less in total production year-over-year.

For the first time in 2022, the Jefferson Nickel saw monthly production of less than one hundred million in November. The Mint reported that 93.6 million Nickels were minted in November, 55.68 million in Denver, and 37.92 million in Philadelphia. For this year, the Mint has minted 1.446 billion Jefferson Nickels for circulation, nearly on par with production through November of last year. Turning to the Roosevelt Dime, it, too, saw a drop in output in November. Total production decreased by 56 million Dimes month-over-month, with 225.5 million coins produced in the month. One hundred thirty-four million of the 220.5 million Dimes minted were made in Denver, with the remaining 86.5 million in Philadelphia. For 2022, the Mint has now made 2.871 billion Dimes for circulation. This is up from the 2.66 billion the Mint had predicted through November 2021.

The Washington Quarter was the final circulating coin that the United States Mint reported producing in November, churning out 201.2 million across the Denver and Philadelphia Mint facilities. The Mint does not break down which of the five different circulating Quarters comprise the total production figure but does indicate that 103.2 million were minted in Denver and the remaining 98 million in Philadelphia. With the November production figures added, the whole Washington Quarter production for the year is now at 2.38 billion coins. This is up by roughly 300 million over last year and exceeds the total Quarter production for all of 2021 with December remaining.

For 2022, the United States Mint has minted 12,773,880,000 coins for circulation. This is down from the 13,540,100,000 that the Mint had produced last year through November. With December traditionally a low production month for the Mint, it is unlikely the Mint will produce as many coins as it did last year. As a reminder, the Mint made 14.4935 billion coins in 2021.
