The United States Mint will open sales of the 2023-W American Eagle silver proof coin later today. On the Mint’s site, sales will begin at Noon Eastern, 9:00 AM Pacific. This year, the one-ounce proof coin is priced at $80, and, as is usually the case, there is no mintage limit on the coin, but there is a household limit of 25 in places.
Unlike 2022, the 2023-W American Eagle silver proof is expected to be readily available when sales begin next week. Last year, the Mint was plagued with planchet shortages that limited opening-day sales. In fact, the Mint at one point indicated that if collectors had not signed up for the coin’s enrollment program, they would not be available on the first day. Supplies did become available later in the year. While the Mint is still facing planchet availability challenges, this year, obtaining the silver proof and other American Eagle coins should be easier.
As for the coin itself, it will feature the Walking Liberty design of Adolph A. Weinman on the Obverse, with the Type-2 Reverse, introduced last year, featuring an eagle as it approaches a landing, carrying an oak branch as if to add it to a nest.
