The United States Mint has released its Circulating Coin Production Report for March 2023, showing that 1.187 billion coins were produced for circulation across the nation’s Mint facilities. Across the various denominations, only the Lincoln Cent had a lower month-over-month production, with overall coinage production up 187 million over the February 2023 report.
Total production of the Lincoln Cent in March 2023 was 400.4 million across the Mint’s production facilities in Denver and Philadelphia. Of that total, 232.4 million were minted in Denver, with the remaining 168 million produced in Philadelphia. The total production is down 6.18% month-over-month. It was the only denomination that showed a decrease in March. Overall, the Mint has now produced 1.312 billion Lincoln Cents for circulation.
Jefferson Nickel’s total production in March 2023 was 155.04 million pieces. Breaking down, the production figures show that 81.36 million were produced in Denver while Philadelphia minted 73.68 million five-cent pieces. The production total was up 22.89% over the February production total. For the year, the Mint has now minted 436.2 million Nickels for circulation.
Turning to the Roosevelt Dime, the Mint report shows that it minted 346.5 million ten-cent pieces in March. Of that, 181.5 million were made in Denver, with the remaining 165 million minted in Philadelphia. The production figure represents a 25.54% increase month-over-month, with total production for 2023 now at 932 million pieces.
Washington Quarter production for March 2023 was reported to be 283.8 million pieces by the United States Mint. Of that total, 146.8 million were minted in Denver and 137 million in Philadelphia. The Mint does not break down which of the various quarter designs made up the total production figure. The increase in production was a significant 27.15% over February, the largest overall increase of any of the circulating coinage for March. For the year, the Mint has now made 753 million Quarters.
The last coin showing production in March was the Kennedy Half Dollar. Total production for the month was 2.2 million, all minted in Denver. There have now been 6.6 million Kennedy Half Dollars minted in 2023, the third consecutive year in which the Kennedy Half Dollar has returned to circulation.
For 2023, the Mint has now minted 3.442 billion coins for circulation. This is down from the 3.962 billion the Mint had produced through March 2022, or a decrease of 13.12%.
