The United States Mint has released its Circulating Coin Production Report for September 2023. The report indicates that the Mint produced just 546.03 million coins last month, a 47% decrease from the reported production in August. While slowdowns in production are expected towards the end of each year, the month-over-month drop is one of the sharper declines in the past several years. Indeed, only the Kennedy Half Dollar had a reported increase in production.
According to the Mint’s report, 180 million Lincoln Cents were produced in September 2023. Of that total, 120 million were minted in Denver, with the remaining 60 million minted in Philadelphia. This total production is down 58% from August. The Mint has produced 3.8852 billion Lincoln Cents for circulation for the year. Turning to the Jefferson Nickel, the Mint reported that 113.05 milion were minted in September. That is down 15.43% when compared to production in August. Breaking down the mintage numbers, 77.04 million Nickels were minted in Denver, with the remaining 36.01 million produced in Philadelphia. For 2022, the Mint has now produced 1.311 billion Nickels for circulation.
The most significant drop in production month-over-month can be found in the Roosevelt Dime. The Mint reported that just 80.48 million Dimes were minted last month, a drop of 68% in production. Of that total, 5.5 million were minted in Denver with the remaining 74.98 million produced in Philadelphia. For 2023, the Mint has minted 2.2984 billion Dimes.
The Washington Quarter also saw decreased production, but not as significantly as the Roosevelt Dime. According to the Mint’s report, 166.2 million Quarters were produced in September. The Mint’s report does not break down the type of Quarters it produced. As readers know, five different Reverse designs are circulating this year, thanks to the American Women Quarter series. Last month’s production breakdown for the Quarter was 108 million being produced in Denver and 58.2 million in Philadelphia.
The only coin to see an increase in product was the Kennedy Half Dollar. The mint reported 6.3 million were produced last month, all in Denver. There were no Native American or Presidential Dollars produced last month.
In 2023, the Mint has produced 10,123,550,000 coins for circulation.
