United States Mint Circulating Coinage Production Report – October 2023

The United States Mint has released its Circulating Coin Production Report for October 2023. The report shows that the United States Mint produced 501,911,000 coins in October. It is the fifth consecutive month of declining production across the Mint’s facilities in Denver and Philadelphia. Month-over-Month, production of individual denominations varied across the board.

The Lincoln Cent had a total production of 252.824 million coins in October. Of that, 126.8 million were minted in Denver, with the remaining 126.04 minted in Philadelphia. The production figures represent a 4.04% increase in Lincoln Cents production compared to the September production totals. For the year, the Mint has minted 4.138 billion Cents.

The Jefferson Nickel saw a decrease in production in October, down to 60.957 million Nickels compared to the 113.05 million minted in September. That is a 46% decrease month-over-month. Breaking down the production total shows that 30.72 million Nickels were minted in Denver and 30.237 million in Philadelphia. The United States Mint has now minted 1.372 billion Nickles in 2023.

By far, the lowest-produced circulating coin in October was the Roosevelt Dime. Just 20,000 were minted, all in Philadelphia, in the month. That is a 99.97% drop month-over-month. It is not uncommon for significant drops like this to occur, especially towards the end of each calendar year when the Mint is looking forward to next year.

Turning to the Washington Quarter, it saw a slight increase in production in October. 168.4 million Quarters were minted in the month, up from the 166.2 million in September. The Mint’s report does not break down the type of Quarters it produced. As readers know, five different Reverse designs are circulating this year, thanks to the American Women Quarter series. A breakdown of the production total shows that 84.4 million Quarters were minted in Denver and 84 million in Philadelphia. For 2023, the Mint has produced 2.466 billion Quarters.

The last coin to be produced in October 2023 was the Kennedy Half Dollar. With the coin returning to circulation last year, production has continued steadily in the last half of this year. In October, 19.71 million Half Dollars were minted, 16 million in Denver, and 3.71 million in Philadelphia. That puts total production for the year at 44.810 million Half Dollars.

Considering the October production figures, the United States Mint has minted 10,625,461,000 coins in 2023.
