Peter van Alfen, the Chief Curator for the American Numismatic Society, has been appointed by United States Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to serve on the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, CCAC. Specifically, van Alfen will serve as Numismatic Curator on the committee, a role previously held by Robert Hoge.
Peter van Alfen is considered to be one of the leading experts in ancient Mediterranean and Near East monetary, fiscal, and trade systems spanning the Late Bronze Age to the early Byzantine period. He has several professional degrees including a PhD Classical Philology from the University of Texas at Austin, MA Anthropology (Nautical Archaeology) from Texas A&M University and Honors BA Classical Philology from the University of Utah.

An economic historian with wide ranging interests, Peter van Alfen works on problems of ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern monetary, fiscal and trade systems spanning the Late Bronze Age to the early Byzantine period. He has published on a variety of topics including Mycenaean administration, Athenian public finance and coinage, market regulations, Arabian monetization, and Late Roman amphoras. His interests also extend to European and US medallic art of the 15th–21st centuries. While overseeing this portion of the ANS collection, he has curated exhibitions and published on medals relating to the Olympics, World Fairs, Ophthalmology, Optics, and the First World War.
