The United States Mint has released its weekly sales report for the week ending August 30, 2020. As expected, the first colorized coins from the Mint sold strong for the week, despite being available only a few days in the timeframe of the report. Annual sets and precious metal products also continued their strong 2020 showing.
Unsurprisingly, the new Basketball Hall of Fame Colorized Half Dollar and Silver Dollar were the top two selling items for the Mint last week. 21,039 of the Colorized Half Dollar were sold while 17,748 of the Colorized Silver Dollar were purchased. The coins were released on August 28, meaning they were only available for 2 of the 7 days of this week’s report. Excitement for these two commemoratives was strong prior to them going on sale given they are the first colorized coins ever produced by the United States Mint.
The third top selling item for the Mint last week was the 2020-W American Eagle silver Proof 1-ounce coin. Another 6,410 of these were purchased last week, pushing the total sales for this year to 337,874. Not too far behind in the fifth position was the 2020-W American Eagle silver Uncirculated 1-ounce coin. 3,080 of these were purchased last week, putting its total sales to 125,669.
Splitting the two bullion products was the 2020 Proof Set. A total of 3,661 of the annual set was purchased last week, putting its total sales for 2020 at 338,579.
The Women’s Suffrage Centennial commemorative products continued to sell well in their second week of availability. The Proof Silver Dollar had 3,007 units sold last week, putting it sixth on the top sellers lest while the Proof Silver Dollar and Medal Set had an additional 1,516 sets sold. That puts its total sales at 9,312 of the 10,000 that are available. It is likely this set will sell out this week. Meanwhile, the Uncirculated Silver Dollar commemorative sold 1,121 coins this week, putting its total sales at 6,664 and placing it tenth on the top sales list.
For the second week in a row, the 2019 American Liberty Silver Medal 2.5-ounce medal made it on the top sales list. Another 1,464 of the medals were sold last week, another strong indicator that collectors and investors continue to gravitate towards precious metals as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
