The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) is currently meeting via audio conference and has released the candidate images of the upcoming 2021 Peace and 2021 Morgan Dollars.
H.R. 6192, which is now Public Law 116-286, was signed by President Trump earlier this month and calls for the United States Mint to create a 2021 Peace Dollar and 2021 Morgan Dollar to honor the 100th anniversary of the transition from the Peace to Morgan coins in 1921. The law itself does not call out any mintage limits, only that the coin is authorized to be sold in 2021 and that the coins will have the exact same designs of the 1921 Morgan and 1921 Peace dollar coins. The designs will, of course, be enhanced slightly thanks to the improved minting processes over the last 100 years and we have our first look at them these candidate images – and they are fantastic.
Because the law requires the coins look like the originals, there wasn’t much of a mystery around what the designs for both coins would be when they are released later this year. Still, it is great to see these historic coins with the 2021 Mint Mark.
As to when the Mint will release final designs and the coins themselves is unknown. Given the later timing of the law being signed, it will likely be late Summer at the earliest given the Mint already has a packed product schedule for this year.
