United States Mint Bullion Sales Report – March 15, 2021

The United States Mint has updated its daily bullion sales report through to this morning, Monday, March 15, 2021. For the previous week, the Mint reported a total of 1,072,000 bullion coins sold to Authorized Purchasers. As has been the case throughout 2020 and the beginning of 2021, the American Eagle silver bullion coin was the top seller, accounting for one million of the coins sold in the past week.

For the year, 9,727,500 silver American Eagles have been sold by the Mint, roughly 32% of the total sales for all of 2020 already this year. However, the total sales for March so far are substantially less than the 5.482 million sold in March 2020. While readers won’t need a reminder, March 2020 was when the United States joined much of the rest of the world in locking down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, demand for bullion skyrocketed and has remained higher-than-normal since.

Turning to the American Eagle gold bullion coin, another 12,500 of those were sold in the past week by the United States Mint. That puts its total for the year at 331,000, approximately 45% of the total sales the Mint saw in all of 2020. While there were no 1/2 ounce or quarter-ounce gold American Eagles sold last week, there were 55,000 1/10th ounce gold coins sold. For the year, there have been 150,000 of these small denomination gold coins sold.

The American Eagle platinum bullion coin saw sales of 4,500 coins for last week, putting its total sales for 2021 at 35,000 coins. While sales of the platinum coin were slow to start in 2021, the total sales thus far are approximately 61% of the total sales of coins – 56,500 – in all of 2020.

There were no reported sales of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin last week.
