Today’s Deal – 1965-1967 Jefferson Nickel 3-Coin Set from Special Mint Sets

Today’s Deal is an exceptional price on a great 3-coin set to add to your Jefferson Nickel collection. The set consists of a 1965, 1966, and 1967 Jefferson Nickel from the Special Mint Sets (SMS) that were released in those years by the United States Mint. Each coin, as you would expect, is in brilliant uncirculated condition and is priced at just $6.45 (plus $3.95 shipping). With the Red Book value of each coin being $5, its a hard deal to pass up.

As some readers know, the United States Mint in 1964, the United States Department of the Treasury announced that in 1965, there would be no Proof or Mint sets offered due to a national coin shortage. In 1966, the San Francisco Assay office of the Mint began producing 1965 dated coins to be sold in a Special Mint Set, or SMS. These coins had a satin-like finish and were brilliant in luster – but not quite Proofs. This practice continued in 1966 and 1967 before normal Proof and Mint sets returned in 1968.

Although the coins were struck in San Francisco, they do not bear the S Mint Mark.
