The United States Mint has updated its daily bullion sales report for the American Eagle and American Buffalo bullion coins for the first time in 2022. This summary report provides sales details through Sunday, January 9, 2022. The bullion sales report reflects bullion coins that the Mint sold to Authorized Purchasers for the previous week and is different than the weekly numismatic product report.
As expected with the beginning of a new year, reported bullion sales were high in the first week of the new year. The Mint reported 3,288,500 bullion coins sold to Authorized Purchasers for the week, the overwhelming majority of those being the silver one ounce American Eagle. The silver Eagle had 3.001 million coins sold, accounting for 92% of all bullion sales reported by the Mint last week. By comparison, the one ounce gold American Eagle, which had a strong start to the year in its own right, had a reported 73,500 coins sold.
Indeed, all of the fractional American Eagle Gold coins had sales last week according to the Mint’s report. The 1/2-ounce gold Eagle had a reported 26,000 coins sold while the 1/25th-ounce coin had a 38,000 coin sales. The smallest fractional, the 1/10th-ounce gold Eagle, had 115,000 coins sold (or 11,500 ounces). The only American Eagle bullion coin that did not have sales was the one ounce platinum bullion coin. The coin, which will be unchanged in design from last year, has not gone into production yet at the Mint and likely will not see sales until the end of this quarter or early next.
Turning to the American Buffalo gold one ounce coin, the Mint reported 35,000 of these coins were sold in the last week. That puts its first week told at over half of the total number sold in January 2021. A year ago, the Mint reported 65,000 Buffalo’s were sold in all of January.
