The United States Mint will open sales of the 2023 Native American Dollar later today. Sales of the 2023 coin, honoring Maria Tallchief, will be available in boxes, bags, and rolls directly from the Mint starting at Noon Eastern, 9:00 AM Pacific. All products will be available, although supplies will be limited.
The 2023 Native American Dollar honors America’s first major prima ballerina, Maria Tallchief.
The 2023 reverse design features Maria Tallchief in a balletic pose. Tallchief was America’s first major prima ballerina, and she and her husband, George Balanchine, transformed American classical ballet. In addition to Tallchief, four other American Indian ballerinas from Oklahoma achieved international recognition in the 20th century, including her younger sister Marjorie Tallchief, Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower, and Moscelyne Larkin. Celebrated as the “Five Moons,” their legacy of achievement and inclusion continues to influence ballet today. A nod to the Five Moons is presented in the lunar motif, while the four ballerinas in the background are symbolic of both Tallchief’s American Indian ballerina contemporaries and the generations of dancers they inspired.
As has been the case since the release of the Sacagawea (now Native American) dollar, the Obverse of the coin remains unchanged. It features Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste, by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The year, mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are incused on the coin’s edge.
