The latest addition to the Presidential Silver Medal series is now available from the US Mint. The new James Madison medal, honoring the fourth President of the United States, is $39.95 on the Mint’s site. There are no household limits on purchasing these new medals.
The Presidential Medals were started in 2018 and there are four medals in the series. One for George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and now James Madison. Each coin is one ounce and is 99.9% silver.
James Madison, our fourth President, was instrumental in determining the course of the new Republic and forming the new national Government. Along with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, he wrote the Federalist Papers, a series of 85 essays advocating adoption of the U.S. Constitution.
The obverse (heads side) of the medal features a portrait of James Madison with the inscriptions “JAMES MADISON,” “PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES,” and “A.D. 1809.”

The reverse (tails) features the inscription “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP,” symbolized by two hands clasped in token of amity. On the cuff of the left wrist are three stripes and buttons, while the other wrist is bare. Above the hands, the pipe of peace and the tomahawk are crossed over each other.
