First Look! The 2021 Peace Dollar

The United States Mint has released images of the 2021 Peace Dollar. The Peace – along with the 2021 Morgan Dollar – are being released laster this year in honor of the 100th anniversary of the end of the Morgan Dollar and the start of the Peace Dollar. To this point, we had only seen mockup images of the coin from the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC).

In December 1921, the new Peace Dollar was approved by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, replacing the Morgan Dollar and marking peace between the U.S. and Germany. More than 1 million of the coins had been struck by the end of the year. The new silver dollar was designed by renowned Italian American Sculptor Anthony de Francisci (1887 – 1964) and minted until 1935.

The 2021 coin will have the same design as the original coin from one hundred years ago albeit it improved for modern coin striking. The coin will only be struck in the Philadelphia Mint facility and it will not bear a Mint Mark.

The new Peace Dollar will be a limited release by the United States Mint with pre-orders starting in June. Pricing will be $85 and there will be limited production Demand for this coin is expected to be exceptionally high given the push from the Numismatic community to have these coins produced.
