Although we are at the end of the month, the United States Mint has posted its first Bullion Sales Report for February. Normally this report is produced daily by the Mint but, like virtually all of the sales reports currently, the Mint is woefully behind in getting them out to the public.
The Bullion Sales Report is focused on the total number of sales of American Eagle bullion coins. The report provides both the number of coins sold in each precious metal, along with the ounces of that bullion sold. Remember that this report is for sales to dealers as the Mint does not sell bullion directly to the public.
As of yesterday, the Mint had sold 601,800 bullion coins in the month of February. This is in sharp contrast to the 4.0205 million it sold in January of this year. For February, those coin sales meant that 586,800 ounces of precious metal was sold in those coins.
Below is the breakdown as of 5:00 PM Eastern on February 26, 2020. Note that each column has the number of coins sold with the number of ounces sold in parenthesis.
Bullion Coin | February | January | Sales Totals |
American Eagle 1 Ounce Gold ($50) | 3,500 (3,500) | 38,000 (38,000) | 41,500 (41,500) |

Total Sales | 601,800 (586,800) | 4,020,500 (3.9415m) | 4,622,300 (4.5283m) |
While this particular report may not be that compelling for many readers, it does provide good insight into how bullion sales are going for the Mint. Bullion is a reasonable profit center for the Mint as reported in their Annual Report.
As to when we will see another of these sales report, that is unclear. US Coin News will continue to monitor the Mint’s site for the report and will post updates periodically assuming daily reports resume.
