The United States Mint produced an impressive 30.6 million bullion coins for sale in calendar year 2021. While this is down from the 31.7 million produced in 2020, it is still the second year in a row where the Mint has sold over 30 million bullion coins. Indeed, all of the bullion coins offered by the Mint through Authorized Purchasers saw record breaking sales except the silver one ounce American Eagle.
The bullion sales report reflects bullion coins that the Mint sold to Authorized Purchasers for the previous week and is different than the weekly numismatic product report.
For 2021, the Mint sold 28.275 million Silver American Eagle bullion coins. This is short of the 30.09 million the Mint sold in 2020 but is still a strong showing. As is normally the case, the silver Eagle accounted for the vast majority of all bullion sales by the Mint, given its relative affordability. As indicated earlier, it was the only bullion coin offered by the Mint that did not see a year-over-year sales increase.
The one ounce gold American Eagle ended 2021 with 1,106,500 coins sold, significantly over the 747,500 that were reported to be sold in 2020. Indeed, all of the fractional gold Eagle coins saw significant increases over last year in terms of coins sold. The 1/2-Ounce Eagle had a reported 95,000 coins sold this year versus 70,000 in 2020. The 1/25th-Ounce had 162,000 in sales in 2021 versus 106,000 in 2020. The 1/10th-Ounce Eagle had 490,000 coins sold in 2021 versus 350,000 in 2020.
The lowest production and sales bullion coins offered by the United States Mint is the one ounce American Eagle platinum coin. This year, just 83,700 were sold but that is still a jump from the 56,500 reported sold in 2020.
Finally, turning to the one ounce American Buffalo Bullion coin, the Mint reported that 350,500 were sold last year. This is up from the 242,000 that the Mint sold in 2020.
